Why EL.RoL. ?

The artistic name is not accidental. EL are the initials of Elena, the artist, and at the same time a masculine pronoun in Spanish, creating a deliberate irony regarding conventions in the art world, where historically, within artistic collaborations, the woman is often perceived as the assistant and the man as the creator. RoL are the initials of Roland, whose vital role in the artistic process often remains in the background, as happens with many assistants. With this choice, EL. RoL. questions traditional roles in art and challenges the notion of who “should” create and how authorship is perceived. The signature thus becomes a conceptual gesture that explores the role of the artist and the assistant, as well as that of man and woman within the art world. 

 ¿Porque EL.RoL.?

El nombre artístico no es casual: EL son las iniciales de Elena, la artista, y a la vez un pronombre masculino, lo que establece una ironía deliberada sobre las convenciones del mundo del arte, donde históricamente, en un grupo artístico, la mujer suele ser percibida como asistente y el hombre como creador. RoL son las iniciales de Roland, cuyo rol vital en la creación artística a menudo permanece en la sombra, como ocurre con muchos asistentes.

Con esta elección, EL.RoL. cuestiona los roles tradicionales en el arte y desafía la noción de quién “debe” crear y cómo se percibe la autoría. La firma se convierte así en un gesto conceptual que explora el rol del artista y del asistente, así como el del hombre y de la mujer en el arte.
